I wish fic writers would get the same amount of support and admiration as fan artists do. (Long rant incoming and no I'm not even going to put it under a read more because it would be skipped over if it was.)

This might sound biased, coming from someone who posts fics and does not have a lick to talent when it comes to art, but just, please, read and try to understand.

It fucking sucks to see something that two different people have spent hours working on and only one gets the attention it rightly deserves because there's no stigma of it being "creepy" or "perverted" like fanfiction does and as publicly too.

I do understand that this will likely never change and that I'll have to get used to it as a fic writer, but, the fact that I'm having to 'get over it' because that's just how it is in fandom-spaces sucks. It shouldn't be like that, it's demoralising, and frankly off-putting. It makes me, and likely others who won't publicly say it, not want to post our written works.

Like there are times where people are literally spending hours and hours planning, drafting, proofreading and then correctly tagging a fic only for it to get no recognition or more critique than adoration. Whereas a fan artist can spend maybe a couple of hours on what they'll call a doodle and get all the praise. This isn't to bash any fan artists because goddamn I know y'all love what you do (and rightly so) but it feels like a stake to heart seeing two sides of the same coin being treated with completely different levels of respect.

Like I also understand that, with how people's attention spans are lessening, that not everyone is bothered or able to read something that's 5k+ (or even 1k+) words and I get it, but also? Give it a chance? You might, now stick with me here, actually like what you read. I know. Shocker.

And, then, if you do actually read something someone has kindly put out into the world for free, don't put comments in your bookmarks or the comments section stating how you "wish it was written different" or "from another character's pov" or when you decided to drop the fic. The author does not want to know when you dropped their fic. Just move the fuck on. If you want it a certain way so much, fucking write it yourself (or if the writer has commissions open, commission them like you would an artist). It is rude to leave comments like this and so incredibly disheartening for the writer of that fic to see such comments. If you have a critique about a fic, privately talk to your friends in the same fandom as you about it or if you don't have that put it in a private discord or something. Unless the author has explictly stated that they would like critiques, which is when you would comment some critiques if you had any, you do not need to leave unwarranted critiques. It is rude and unnecessary.

I could share screenshots of people who leave unwarranted critiques to fics in their comments section or bookmark comments, but because I'm a kind individual who frankly cannot be bothered to compile several tumblr posts of solely images, I'm not. But do know that we do see every comment under our works and saying "oh I didn't think you'd see it" is not a fucking excuse. People who make fan creations often look into their comments to see people's reactions, in hopes of having spread the joy or similar emotion they had when writing or drawing their piece.

And content creators who review fan art with praise and then immediately make fun of fic writers, I despise you. Genuinely. The fact that you think it's okay to uplift one part of your creative audience while not doing such with the other is disgusting. I do understand that there are boundaries that a person will have towards both forms of media but completely writing off one form of fan creation while entertaining the other is genuinely one of the most saddening things. It creates a further divide between these two sides of fan creation and reinforces people's mean attitudes towards fanfic writers simply because how they express their love for a piece of media is not easily viewed. There are, obviously creators who do acknowledge but stay away from fanfiction and I respect that; it's about actively going into those spaces to criticise and, in some cases, bully, those writers about something they're passionate about. If you're that insistent on leaving a negative comment on something, please, for the love of everything get a fucking life.

This is a long winded way of saying respect people who make fan content because, 99% of the time, they're doing it for free and for their own entertainment.

Thanks @heylittleriotact for the tag today! And @mistressandry for one earlier this week. I don't know if I'm finishing this one. But HOW IS THERE NO PUSHING DAISIES AU YET. So here a wip of my take on it.

Emmrich Volkarin was six years old when he learned he could raise the dead.

He discovered this gift when his mother lay lifeless before him.

A single touch to her bloodstained cheek, and her green-flecked hazel eyes fluttered open. She spoke without air, words without weight, her lungs couldn't fill. Pinned as they were between a ceiling that met floor. The same ceiling that thought to leave him unharmed. No. That had been his mother, she'd pushed him clear hadn't she? He swallowed.

Shrank back as she awoke. Her movements jerked, twitched, out of place, muscle and bone displaced. She spoke. He could see her lips move. Love—they uttered—perhaps. Or darling or dear. But Emmrich, the boy, heard only blood falling from teeth. A tick tack on ground.

"Elanora!!"

His father's shout.

"Emmrich!!!"

And though his lungs were full his throat shut vised. No reply. Still his mother worked to extricate, and the scratching of her nails and the shifting of her weight made noise enough for her Rupert to narrow in.

A fierce pounding began. Shoulder on wood. Battering ram at gates. And Emmrich felt the debris around shiver with his father's fury. He chanced a look behind. Glimpsed a worry-creased face through a break, wide bright eyes locked with his. Paternal gaze left a moment. Flicked a look behind, widened further still, and darted back, stayed glued to his son,

"Look at me Emm—" his name ended with a fleshy thud, and light streamed in where his father's head had been. It had been a good long minute since his still mother moved. And he never heard his father again.

The scrabble behind continued, beckoned his attention to turn. He did. And with sight blurred, he pictured her whole, his mother so close to free. He felt some strength return, an urge to help begin. And as he reached to her so she reached to him. Her finger brushed his chin. Touch dropped. Another wet thud. And she fell dead—again.

Emmrich Volkarin was six when he learned there are rules to raising the dead.

One. First touch, life. He had raised his crushed corpse mother. Two. Second touch, death. She had passed then. Three. A trickier discovery confirmed later with ants. Compensation. If the raised being stayed alive a full minute, another nearby soul of similar flair took its place. He had killed his father.

So Emmrich Volkarin was six when he became an orphan. And he was six when he swore to let the dead rest. And he was six when he promised to never join them.

Emmrich Volkarin was fifty when he broke his first oath for a cat he named Manfred.

And Emmrich Volkarin was fifty-six when he considered doing so again.

ithink the thing tht rlly kills me abt cpumpkin misrepresentation is the deliberately obtuse readings of things tht r so plain and easy and simple to watch on the damn screen. on an objective level, yes, cschlatt can be v v mean to cq. he certainly gets his digs in, its not like crazy to point that out.

the problem is ppl treating tht like it's a uniquely cschlatt trait, when it's Not In The Slightest. ALL the characters are massive assholes. and not only is cq ALSO a massive asshole who is more than willing to get HIS OWN digs in, theyre in a circumstance where tensions are ridiculously high. they're targets, they're lashing out and stressed to shit, thts whats causing the build up in the first place. they were fine when they didnt have all these things breathing down their necks.

but also, crucially, OTHER PPL CQ INTS W TREAT HIM THE SAME. ppl who aren't even his friends or close to him get their jabs in, like cpuffy...or ppl who ARE his v close pals, like ctommy who literally *cannot* stop talking crazy to him when he joins pogtopia, and outright confirms everyone there mocks and degrades cq non stop.

even for cqs other partners/situationships... ckarl has multiple scenes where he watches csweater do their little snipes, and he hypes them up and agrees with them! ckarl tells cq he's ugly, that nobody likes him, tht he's disgusting, and during the times his memory is getting worse but still coherent enough to know theyre engaged, he point blank says the only good think about him is his body. csap doesn't get as many digs in, but he never really. does anything abt it? he watches ckarl say these things abt cq, get crueler and crueler towards him, and doesn't even mention/notice anything is too outta the norm. cwil is like. objectively the worse out of all of them, the way he talks to cq is genuinely ghoulish if you bother to listen...he calls him scum, he calls him trash, less than a worm, a pathetic walking beacon of failure, an object who's better off staying as quiet property, and he never Stops. frm all the way back to cq first being in the server, to lnv itself, cwil never stops talking to him this way. even the extra layers...like tell me honestly and earnestly if you'd go up to your mexican friend and call them the cleaner the help the valet in wht you Know is their own house, their place of business, and tell me honestly and earnestly tht you wouldn't deserve them jumping across the table to beat yr ass.

to expand, think of other relationships,,,cclingy hve also lashed out at eachother horribly, in v v terrible ways because of their circumstances, but they still care abt eachother, they matter so much they r Crucial to eachother even being alive they r codependent in the strongest sense of the word...cbitter/crain/cniki + tommy are all insane people lashing out like crazy, but objectively they mean sm to eachother its Palpable. cbee are INCREDIBLY important to eachother, to the point tht whn ctubs loses cran in what he thinks is fr good, he has sm kinda mental break and kills an inoccent third party in the grief of it. ctubs was ALSO. v willing to use cranboo as a lab rat, and often overrides wht he knows cboo probably wouldn't agree to under normal circumstances, bcs its wht HE wants. and cboo is v v spineless, willing to align themselves w ppl ctubbo is Actively Scared Of bcs cboo thinks it's the moral high ground over his husband and kid's security. AND THEY STILL LOVE EACHOTHER. FOREVER AND EVER!!!

thts actually the thing tht makes the dsmp so special in the first place imo! these characters are all PEOPLE! they're all so raw and messy and flawed and snappy and tired but they're ALIVE they're HUMAN. they love they care they search fr eachother they stand together no matter what and in the face of the unsolvable unstoppable all this conflict and complexity and pain, they still chose to care abt eachother! even when it getting ripped frm their hands is all but confirmed!! they choose to love!

idk either you fucking get it or you gont. dsmp can have ppl acting crazy, but ycant objectively say they don't matter to eachother you cant be srs w this media and not understand tht the love was there whn thts the thesis of all of it, and blacking out between scenes doesnt make the ones you choose to take in the only real & true ones. like objectively cq cares abt cschlatt and cschlatt cares abt him those r just the facts. cq is the craziest most desperate and EXCLUSIVELY cannibalistic abt cschlatt. tht MEANS smthng. and that doesnt go away cus youre pasting over images of other ppl or just pretending it doesn't exist at all like it ain't crucial to their arcs in one of the most consistent throughlines in the series. GET UP.
